How to get fit together when you're both starting from zero

An 8-week beginner plan for couples: small weekly targets, simple workouts, and how to keep each other going.

Updated 2026-11-01 · Pioneer Group ApS

If neither of you has worked out in a while, the hardest part is the first month. Doing it together makes that part much easier, as long as you start small.

Weeks 1–2: just show up

Weeks 3–4: add strength

Weeks 5–6: build the habit

Weeks 7–8: make it yours

Rules that keep beginners going

  1. Weekly targets, not daily ones. Missing a day is fine if you hit the week. See how many days a week to work out.
  2. Log every session so your partner sees it. Heartpair shows who has trained today.
  3. Never let it get to zero. On a bad day, a 10-minute walk still counts.
  4. Celebrate the streak, not the scale. A shared weekly streak is a better motivator than any number.

If one of you is ahead

Set separate targets. The fitter partner can add a session alone; what matters is that you both hit your own plan every week.

If you have a health condition or haven't exercised in years, check with your doctor before starting.

FAQ

How do couples get fit together?

Agree on a small weekly target each, log your workouts so you can see each other's progress, and add a fun stake. Increase the target every two weeks.

How many times a week should beginners work out?

Two or three times a week is a good start. Build to three or four over about two months.

What if my partner doesn't want to work out?

Start with something low-key you can do together, like an evening walk, and see the guide on how to motivate your partner.
