How to motivate your partner to work out (without nagging)
Encouragement that works: shared goals, playful stakes and making it easy to say yes.
Nagging rarely works. What does work is making exercise something you do together, with a little fun on the line.
Do
- Invite, don't instruct. "Want to walk after dinner?" beats "You should exercise more."
- Start with their kind of movement. Yoga, swimming or walking all count. Heartpair logs all of them.
- Set a weekly target together, small enough to hit. Two days a week is a fine start.
- Add a playful stake. Loser cooks dinner. See our fitness bets.
- Celebrate showing up, not results. A 3-week streak is worth a cheer.
Don't
- Compare bodies or weights
- Pick a plan only you enjoy
- Make missed days a big deal; weekly targets allow rest days
